An impressive 19th century ceramic vase with blue & white chinoiserie decoration. The maker’s mark, “David Johnston, Bordeaux. Importation Anglaise” indicates that the piece was made in Bordeaux using English raw materials. The vase is made of fine earthenware, known in French as faience fine.
David Johnston was a wealthy dignitary of English descent, who also served as the mayor of Bordeaux from 1838 to 1842. He opened a ceramic factory in Bordeaux in the early 19th century, and this piece dates from the period between 1834 and 1845, when Johnston sold the factory to Jules Vieillard.
Beautiful condition for its age, with no repairs.
